USA Ultimate Names Head Coaches for 2016 World Junior Ultimate Championships

Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 30, 2015) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, announced today the head coaches for the two teams that will represent the U.S. at the 2016 World Junior Ultimate Championships.
Chase Sparling-Beckley (Portland, Ore.) will lead the open team, and Jamie Nuwer (San Francisco, Calif.) will coach the girls’ team. Sparling-Beckley returns as the open team’s head coach, while Nuwer takes on the head coaching role for the first time after serving as an assistant coach for the girls’ U-19 team in Lecco, Italy in 2014.

Chase Sparling-Beckley returns in 2016 as the U-20 Open National Team head coach. He coached the 2014 National Team to a silver medal at WJUC in Italy. Before taking on the head coaching role, Sparling-Beckley served as an assistant coach for the open squad that won gold at the 2012 WJUC as well as the first-place 2006 U-19 open team. He has coached high school and college teams on both coasts and has no shortage of international playing experience. Sparling-Beckley is an alumni of the 2005 and 2013 U.S. World Games teams. He has won championships at every level: youth, college, club and international. Sparling-Beckley was also the recipient of the 2007 Farricker Award.

After assisting the girls’ silver-medalist U-19 World Championship team in 2012 and helping the U.S. girls’ team win a gold medal last summer, Jamie Nuwer returns as head coach for 2016. Before working with the U-19 teams, she served both 2010 WJUC squads as a physician. Nuwer also coached the Stanford University women’s team, Superfly, to a second-place finish at this year’s College Championships. Her playing career includes two consecutive Club Championships in 2011 and 2012 with Blackbird, a mixed club team from San Francisco. Nuwer has also competed in several world championship events.

"I'm so grateful for the opportunity to serve as the head coach for the USNT girls," said Nuwer. "I already know the team will be awesome based on my past experiences. I am thrilled to take on the world on behalf of the U.S.A.!"
Assistant coaches for both teams will be announced in early September. Applications for athletes interested in competing with the U-20 National Teams next summer will open in the coming weeks, with tryout camps to be held for invited applicants in November.
The 2016 World Junior Ultimate Championships will be held July 31-Aug. 6 in Wroclaw, Poland, the same site where the 2017 World Games are set to take place. The event will be hosted by the World Flying Disc Federation and the Polish Ultimate Players Association.
