Boulder, Colo. (Aug. 29, 2014) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, announced today the head coaches for the three teams that will represent the U.S. at the 2015 Under-23 World Ultimate Championships.

After an extensive application and interview process including members of both the USA Ultimate staff and the USA Ultimate coaching committee, Bob Krier (Boulder, Colo.) was selected to lead the open team, Martin Aguilera (Atlanta, Ga.) was chosen to coach the mixed team, and Mike Whitaker (Boulder, Colo.) was selected to lead the women’s team. All three coaches are returning to their respective teams after gold-medal runs at the 2013 U-23 Championships in Toronto.

Krier Bob

Krier has been an active member of the ultimate community for nearly 20 years. He was a member of the University of Colorado Mamabird before moving on to play with Johnny Bravo. He has also competed at the masters and grandmasters levels. Krier has been coaching ultimate for over a decade. He is currently the head coach of Boulder’s Johnny Bravo in the club men’s division and spent many years as an assistant for the University of Colorado men’s team as well as working with Colorado’s youth teams.

"I'm looking forward to returning to coach the U-23 national team and to the challenges that come from high expectations, as we attempt to defend our 2013 championship," said Krier.

Martin Aguilera

Aguilera started his playing career at Paideia High School in the early 90s before playing at Georgia Tech and on various club-level mixed teams in Atlanta. He has also competed at the masters level with Atlanta Reckon. His coaching credentials include positions with the Georgia Tech men’s team and the Emory University women’s squad during their rise to prominence on the national level. More recently, Aguilera returned to Paideia High School as part of the coaching staffs for both the boys and girls teams.

"I'm very excited to be afforded this opportunity and am looking forward to working with a group of great, young ultimate players to represent the United States and USA Ultimate in the best way possible," said Aguilera.

Whitaker Mike

Whitaker played college ultimate at Stanford University and led the team to a national championship in 2002 before joining Boulder’s Johnny Bravo in the club division. He went on to coach the University of Colorado women’s team for four years and has held various leadership positions for both Johnny Bravo and several mixed teams.

"I'm honored to be selected to lead the U.S. U-23 women at the 2015 World Championships," said Whitaker. "Coaching the 2013 U-23 championship team was an incredible experience with an outstanding group of women who will be leaders in our sport for years to come, and I can't wait to meet the next generation during the 2015 selection process."

The 2015 U-23 World Championships are hosted by the World Flying Disc Federation. The date and location are still TBD.
