USA ULTIMATE MAKES UPDATE TO RANKINGS ALGORITHM

Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 12, 2018) – USA Ultimate announced today a change to the algorithm used to determine rankings for the College and Club seasons. Specifically, this change addresses the issue of relatively short games (based on total points played) having the same impact on the rankings as games that reach a higher number of total points.

Effective immediately, any game in which the winning score is less than 13 AND the point total (combined scores of both teams) is less than 19, will receive a slightly lower weight than a game that has a final point total of 19 or higher.

The goal of this change is to make the algorithm, which relies on point totals and differentials to compare teams, more reliable by slightly discounting the value of any game that provides significantly less information about the two teams.

More information regarding this change and the updated algorithm will be available next week on USA Ultimate’s rankings page.

A proposal was submitted by the USA Ultimate Rankings Working Group to the USA Ultimate Competition Working Group prior to its meeting last month. After evaluating the proposal, asking questions, and comparing rankings using past results, both the College and Club working groups approved the change. The change is effective beginning with the 2018 College and Club regular seasons."
