Boulder, Colo. (Dec. 31, 2014) – Following significant and consistent growth of its youth division over the last several years, USA Ultimate has expanded its annual Youth Club Championships to three days, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States announced today.
The 2015 Youth Club Championships (YCC) will return to its perennial home at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. for the 11th consecutive year, Aug. 7-9, and will again be hosted by Minnesota Youth Ultimate.
The Youth Club Championships have seen marked growth over the last decade and now hosts more teams than any other annual USA Ultimate championship event. The 2014 edition included 62 teams and more than 1,200 athletes representing 25 different communities from around the nation – each number a record for YCC.
The expansion of the Youth Club Championships to a three-day event comes in response to the continued growth of the tournament and follows several years of dialogue and gathering feedback to fully understand the benefits and potential impact of the change. Adding a day to the event allows for additional flexibility in:
-
competition formats, to ensure the best competitive experience for all teams;
-
scheduling, including the potential for longer games with more time in between rounds; and
-
the ability to expand the event in the future as interest continues to increase.
The 2015 edition will again include five competition divisions: U-19 boys, U-19 girls, U-19 mixed, U-16 boys and U-16 girls.
Following the event, on Monday, Aug. 10, USA Ultimate will again host a U-19 National Team Talent ID Camp with national team coaching staff as a lead-up to the 2016 WFDF World Junior Ultimate Championships. The camp will be open to all YCC participants.
"The National Sports Center staff and local community are excited to be hosting the 11th-annual USA Ultimate Youth Club Championships," said Stephonie Broughton, the National Sports Center’s Manager of Soccer and Field Sport Programs. "We have enjoyed watching ultimate continue to grow ever since we hosted our first ultimate event, the World Ultimate Championships in 1998. The sport of ultimate has such a great environment, and we welcome the opportunity to support USA Ultimate on other events in the future."
