U.S. National Team sets its sights on Colombia and a third consecutive gold medal
Boulder, Colo. (May 15, 2013) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, is pleased to announce the 13 athletes selected to travel to Cali, Colombia this July to represent the U.S. at the 2013 World Games.
More than 500 people from across the United States applied to be considered for the 2013 National Team. Invitations to participate in one of two tryout camps, either in San Francisco or Washington, DC, were extended to 99 applicants, 78 of which attended the camps. From those 78, 20 athletes were chosen to participate in two weekend training sessions, the first in San Francisco followed by a second in Boston this past weekend.
Head Coach Alex Ghesquiere and Assistant Coach Matty Tsang used the training weekends to further evaluate the team before paring down the original 20-person roster to the 13 athletes listed below. The team will seek to bring home a third consecutive World Games gold medal.
Coach Ghesquiere explains, "Selecting thirteen players from our initial 20 was very difficult for Matty and me – all of the U.S.A. team members are great ultimate players, and all of them were at some point shuffled into or out of the final roster in our minds. We have ended up with an outstanding group of players going to Colombia and an outstanding group of alternates to back them up. I'm certain that the challenge ahead of our team is significant and that all of our players are up to it."
Before traveling to Colombia, the team will gather for three more practice weekends: June 15-16 where they will compete at Poultry Days in Versailles, Ohio; in coordination with the U.S. Open Ultimate Championships and Convention in Raleigh, N.C., July 4-7; and finally in Denver shortly before the Games.
The World Games are scheduled to take place July 25-August 4 in Cali. Ultimate teams from six nations will compete in the three-day flying disc tournament July 28-30. Participating teams will represent Australia, Canada, Colombia, Great Britain, Japan and the United States.
The 2005 and 2009 U.S. National Teams won gold at the World Games in Duisburg, Germany and Kaohshing, Taiwan. In 2001, at the first World Games’ Flying Disc competition, the U.S. team won silver.
