Boulder, Colo. (March 14, 2014) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, announced today the hiring of a new team member in the Competition & Athlete Programs department.

Ernest Toney was named the new Manager of Competition and Athlete Programs – Club and will oversee USA Ultimate’s club and masters divisions programs, as well as other programs throughout the year. He will assist in the management of events, including event direction/management, registration and processing, event communication and support of personnel and relevant committees.

Toney joins the headquarters team with a strong background both in ultimate and in sport management. He spent several years working for the YMCA of Southern Arizona as a sports coordinator and membership and marketing director before taking a position as an account executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks. For the last few years, he has owned his own consulting business based in Denver that helped sport, recreation and fitness businesses build their brands and increase sales.  He began playing ultimate while a student at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., where he received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and a master’s degree in sport and recreation management. Since graduating from college, he has played with club teams based in Arizona and Colorado in the mixed and men’s divisions, mostly recently with Denver’s Inception.

"We are looking forward to adding Ernest to the Competition Programs team here at USA Ultimate," said Will Deaver, Managing Director of Competition & Athlete Programs. "We’re excited about seeing Ernest combine his education and work experience in the field of sports with his playing experience and passion for ultimate to add value to the Triple Crown Tour, Masters Division and other USA Ultimate programs and events."

Toney’s unique skill set and wide range of knowledge and experience of the ultimate community and the business of sport management, will help him make an immediate impact in his new role with USA Ultimate as he works to continue developing the club and masters divisions and create additional quality playing opportunities.

"I am very excited to join USA Ultimate," said Toney. "I have witnessed our sport grow first-hand since joining the UPA in 2000, and I look forward to working with our membership, volunteers and leadership team to continue advancing ultimate throughout the U.S."

Toney is currently a Denver resident and will join the headquarters team in Boulder in mid-March.
