Run for the 2019-21 USA Ultimate Board of Directors

Posted: September 6, 2018 03:02 PM

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sept. 6, 2018)—The process to fill two seats on the 2019-21 USA Ultimate Board of Directors has officially begun with a search for potential candidates. Individuals interested in providing long-term strategic direction, setting policy or overseeing effective corporate governance for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit amateur sports organization are encouraged to express their interest.

Potential candidates may express interest in one of two available seats – At-Large or Elite Athlete. Both are three-year terms beginning on January 1, 2019 and expiring on December 31, 2021.

All current members of USA Ultimate at least 18 years of age and in good standing are eligible to run for the At-Large seat.

Only current USA Ultimate members at least 18 years of age and in good standing who meet the definition of an Elite Athlete, as defined by Section 5.6(b) of the USA Ultimate Bylaws, may run in the Elite-Athlete election.

Dave Klink (Elite Athlete) and Henry Thorne (At-Large) will see their terms expire on Dec. 31, 2018.

This first step in USA Ultimate’s annual election process is a public call for candidates, inviting individuals to formally express their interest in serving on the board.

For a detailed description of the board’s scope of responsibilities and full eligibility requirements, please read Article V of the USA Ultimate Bylaws

To be considered, eligible candidates should express their interest by sending a letter to USA Ultimate’s nominating committee at nom_comm@usaultimate.org. The deadline to apply is September 23.

The three-person nominating committee is chaired by Josh Seamon and includes Heather Ann Brauer and Henry Thorne.

At a minimum, expressions of interest must include:

  • Full name

  • USA Ultimate membership number

  • Contact information, including phone number and email address

  • Outline of relevant experience

  • Statement explaining why you’re interested in serving on the USA Ultimate board

  • Which seat you’d like to be considered for: (At-Large or Elite Athlete)

In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, qualified candidates shall possess the highest personal values, judgment and integrity consistent with the organization’s mission and vision while exhibiting an understanding of athletic competition, Olympic ideals and familiarity with the business, financial and other challenges and issues inherent to national governing bodies of amateur sport. Often, they have strong professional backgrounds in fields such as finance, fundraising, governance, strategic planning, marketing, audit, management, communications, law, equity, diversity and inclusion, or other sport-related issues.

After expressions of interest have been submitted, the nominating committee will send interested parties documentation outlining the specific requirements and expectations for serving on the USA Ultimate Board of Directors, so they may evaluate the necessary commitments and responsibilities.

If interested individuals agree to meet these requirements, the nominating committee will then conduct a formal review of applicants and determine a final list of candidates to participate in the election. Decisions will be made based on a variety of factors, including eligibility, area of expertise, qualifications and conflicts of interest or other potentially disqualifying factors.

Approved candidates included on the official ballot will then be required to draft and submit a formal campaign statement for publication by September 30.
