Colorado Springs, Colo. (Feb. 27, 2018) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States and proud member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, is excited to introduce the newest members of the Rules Working Group.

The working group is tasked with the ongoing assessment of the Official Rules of Ultimate, currently in their 11th edition, as well as updates to the existing rules. Updates and revisions will be incorporated into the rules and introduced as the 12th Edition Rules of Ultimate, the first new edition in more than 10 years.

The group is headed by National Rules Director Janna Hamaker, who took on the role earlier this year. Joining her in the group are five new members from all across the country with a breadth of knowledge and playing experience:

  • George Brell – St. Louis, Mo.

  • Ariel Jackson – Boston, Mass.

  • Amelia Murphy – New York, N.Y.

  • Anne Silver – Seattle, Wash.

  • Tim Schoch – Northfield, Minn.

The six new members join current members Alan Hoyle, Mark Moran and Florian Pfender on the Rules Working Group. Outgoing chair Colin McIntyre and former chair Jon Baumann will both continue to serve in advisory roles.

The group will begin their work by reviewing and updating existing rules revision policies before beginning revisions to the existing rulebook. They will collaborate with the existing Spirit of the Game and Observer Working Groups throughout the development of the 12th edition rules. The Rules Working Group will also engage with the ultimate community to hear new ideas and gather feedback about and evaluate potential rules changes.

Development of the 12th edition is expected to take the better part of the 2018 calendar year, so rules changed in the new edition will not affect play for any competition division in 2018. A final publication date is not yet set, but no matter when the 12th edition is released, players and coaches will have ample time to become familiar with and adjust to any changes before the rules are used in official USA Ultimate competition.
