Rachel Johnson Named New National Girls’ Outreach Director

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Nov. 11, 2015) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, is excited to announce the addition of Rachel Johnson to the youth division’s national volunteer structure as the new National Girls’ Outreach Director. Johnson assumes the role following Heather Ann Brauer’s move to the position of Girls’ Ultimate Movement (GUM) Chair.
In her new role, Johnson will continue building on the foundation laid by Brauer to help USA Ultimate in its continuing efforts to increase the number of girls participating in the sport around the country. The National Girls’ Outreach Director, more than any other position in the youth volunteer structure, is focused on reaching out to areas without a current structure for girls’ play and helping identify volunteers who can lead the development of community-appropriate playing opportunities and nurture new communities in growing girls’ ultimate.
In addition, Johnson will assist in the recruitment of four Girls’ Regional Outreach Directors (GROD) who will help create new playing opportunities in their geographic areas. As the GNOD, Johnson will serve as part of the Youth Working Group and will contribute to the development of guidance on best practices for girls’ outreach and competition and, along with the GRODs, will provide resources and assistance on outreach programs to Girls’ State Outreach Coordinators. She will also work closely with Brauer in her role as the new Girls’ Ultimate Movement Chair to implement GUM programming through the youth volunteer structure across the country.
"I'm so excited to be working with this fantastic group of USAU staff and national volunteers," said Johnson. "We have a lot of momentum in the girls' ultimate community, and I am looking forward to all the things GUM can accomplish in the coming years. Growing girls' ultimate is my biggest passion, and I can't wait to share that with other GUM volunteers across the country."
Johnson is an active member of North Carolina's Triangle Area ultimate community. She currently sits on the Triangle Ultimate Board of Directors and has volunteered as a youth ultimate coach, organizer of elementary school Learn to Play clinics and a women’s sectional coordinator. In addition, Johnson helps run Take the Field, the Triangle Area’s successful girls’ program that teaches leadership through ultimate. Competitively, she is a four-year member of elite women’s club team Raleigh Phoenix.
