Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 29, 2017) – After announcing last year that the Youth Club Championships (YCC) and U.S. Open will be held side by side at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn., through 2019, USA Ultimate revealed today a new identity and logo treatment for the event.
The newly branded U.S. Open Club Championships will feature 135 youth and elite-level club teams in 2017.
As part of the rebrand, the event will consist of two main divisions – the Youth Club Championships (YCC) and the International Club Championships (ICC). The nomenclature allows for USA Ultimate to retain the YCC label – an event with a 13-year history of crowning national champions in the youth division – as well as more accurately describe the global nature of the elite division, which in 2017 has attracted teams from Canada, Colombia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Great Britain, and in the past hosted squads from Australia, Denmark, Germany and Panama.
The YCC division of the U.S. Open Club Championships will consist of five subdivisions: U-20 Boys, U-20 Mixed, U-20 Girls, U-17 Boys and U-17 Girls.
The ICC division will include men’s, mixed and women’s subdivisions.
All totaled, the YCC division will feature 99 teams, and the ICC division will host 36 teams.
"While technically combining two pre-existing tournaments, in many ways we’re creating a new event," explained Andy Lee, managing director of marketing, communications and brand, "which inspired a refresh and re-imagination of the logo. It was important to keep the YCC element as a strong component of the new identity because of its well-established history and brand recognition in the ultimate community, while at the same time developing a look that captured the international flavor of the tournament."
The event runs at the National Sports Center August 4-7. Each division will compete over three days with the ICC division running Aug. 4-6, and the YCC division taking place Aug. 5-7.
Spin will be the official merchandise partner for the event and will design and sell officially licensed event merchandise bearing both the new brand, as well as specifically branded YCC apparel.
