Murphy joins the headquarters team with a strong background in all aspects of ultimate, as a player, organizer and coach. He served on the board of directors for the Triangle Flying Disc Association (TFDA) for four years, including stints as treasurer and director of operations before becoming TFDA’s first full-time staff member as interim executive director. He started playing ultimate at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., before moving to the Raleigh, N.C., area and continuing to compete in both local leagues and the club division.

"We couldn’t be more excited to have Josh Murphy join our Membership and Sport Development team here at USA Ultimate," said Director of Membership & Sport Development Melanie Byrd. "Josh brings a unique set of skills and experiences which will help us advance our membership and sport development goals. Prior to accepting this position, Josh worked as a software developer for almost 10 years, spent time in Japan and Haiti assisting people in need and volunteered with TFDA, the local disc organization in Raleigh-Durham, before filling in as their interim Executive Director. Josh will be a huge asset as we continue to focus on adding online features to our new custom-built system and building a strong partnership program with our affiliates."

Murphy has educational backgrounds in multiple fields, including computer science, mathematics and nursing, as well as a plethora of volunteer experience ranging from league organizer to rehabilitation clinic coordination in Haiti. His wide range of knowledge and experience will help him make an immediate impact in his new role interacting with the USA Ultimate membership and expanding new and current membership programs.

"I am very excited and truly honored to join USA Ultimate in advancing this amazing sport, serving our dedicated membership and delivering the greatest positive impact to public health," explained Murphy. "While several other team sports also compel impressive aerobic fitness, dedicated group cooperation and understanding of effective rule sets, I have witnessed first-hand the enormous benefits and healthier outcomes ultimate provides through its strong emphasis upon mutual respect between opponents and understanding differences in perspective. Ultimate creates stronger people, not just athletes."

Murphy will join the USA Ultimate headquarters team in Boulder in mid-February, after relocating from Raleigh, N.C.
