Boulder, Colo. (January 23, 2014) – The third annual USA Ultimate U.S. Open Championships are beginning to take shape. After determining America’s top teams at the 2013 National Championships last October, thereby solidifying bids in each of the men’s, mixed and women’s divisions for the 2014 U.S. Open, focus shifted toward the international arena.

USA Ultimate is excited to announce that the United Kingdom’s top team in each of the men’s and women’s divisions, Clapham Ultimate and Iceni, will both be making the trip from London, England to Minnesota’s Twin Cities to participate in this year’s U.S. Open Championships and prep for the world championships later this summer. For a third consecutive year, two of Colombia’s top teams, Evolution (men’s) and Bamboo (women’s) will also be making the trip to compete with some of the world’s best at the U.S Open.

Clapham Ultimate are the reigning European, UK and UK Tour Champions. They have taken the top spot at UK Nationals for 13 consecutive years. In their trip to the Chesapeake Invite last year, Clapham earned a spot in the semifinals with wins against several teams who later earned bids to the USA Ultimate National Championships, including Ring of Fire, Chain Lightning and Madcow. They also tallied close losses against PoNY and Ironside.

In their 10-year history, Iceni has won the UK National Championships eight times and claimed the European Championships crown five times. Their 2013 European title was their third consecutive championship. In addition to their five gold medals at the European Championships, they have also claimed a bronze and two silvers since 2006, making them the most successful women’s team in Europe over the past eight years.

Clapham, Iceni, Evolution and Bamboo will join America’s best teams and other top teams from around the globe in the men’s, mixed and women’s divisions at the U.S. Open this year, many before facing off again at the WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships a month later in Lecco, Italy.

The 2014 U.S. Open Championships and Convention will take place July 3-6 in Blaine, Minn. For more information on the 2014 U.S. Open, stayed tuned to the USA Ultimate website at usaultimate.org/usopen and follow @usopenultimate on Twitter.
