Boulder, Colo. (Oct. 24, 2013) – The Ultimate Hall of Fame classes of 2009-2013 were officially inducted at a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2013 USA Ultimate National Championships in Frisco, Texas last weekend. Notable players and contributors to the sport from all eras of ultimate history were on-hand to celebrate the achievements of their peers through a full slate of activities and ceremonies.
The weekend was an opportunity for old friends to reunite and celebrate their accomplishments, past and present. At Saturday night’s induction ceremony, each new inductee was honored and given a chance to share a few words. Overwhelmingly, the most revered people in the sport spoke of community and the place ultimate has held and continues to hold in their lives. Themes familiar to nearly everyone who has spent time in or around the sport.
"This sport has been extremely influential to me, in all aspects of life," said Jim Ingebritsen. "It taught me things about myself, it gave me drive, it gave me ambition, and I'm just honored to have played with the guys that I've played with."
Beyond the common themes of community and family was a clear shared respect for both teammates and foes from years past, a respect that time and perspective has strengthened. More than anything else, it was resoundingly clear how thankful these men and women are to the sport itself for the impact it has made in their lives, hopefulness for the future, and honor at having been part of its past.
"As much as we've seen the sport grow, as much as it has grown, and it’s super exciting, we are the luckiest people to have gotten to experience those changes and see it all happen," reflected Nancy Glass.
Friends, family, former teammates and countless others were witness to some of the greatest names and faces of the sport officially joining the Hall of Fame, and tributes to these special people were commonplace. Ten members of the former Boston Hostages, dressed in newly designed Hostages jerseys, came together to support their old teammate, David Barkan, as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. An entire table of women clad in pink, a nod to Ozone days gone by, was on hand to cheer on Chris O’Cleary as she was honored.
The party lasted all weekend, starting with the Discraft Welcome Reception on Friday night and ending with the Discraft Induction Ceremony and Reception, with countless activities, ranging from pickup ultimate to VIP treatment and spectating the best games of the weekend, all squeezed in between.
In all, 21 inductions into the Hall of Fame were made official on Oct. 19: 19 players, one contributor and one special merit.
