Colorado Springs, Colo. (Dec. 5, 2016) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, is excited to announce the appointment of Chuck Gargaly to the youth division’s national volunteer structure as the new National Outreach Director. Gargaly assumes the role after Claire Chastain stepped down from the position earlier this fall.
In his new role, Gargaly will serve as a member of USA Ultimate’s Youth Working Group and work with the USA Ultimate Youth and Education Programs staff to bring the sport of ultimate to new youth populations in the United States. He will also assist in the further expansion of the youth volunteer structure by identifying and recruiting individuals to serve as state outreach coordinators (SOCs). With Gargaly’s help, these state-level individuals will lead the growth of community-appropriate playing opportunities in their respective states. He will also contribute to the development of guidance on best practices for outreach for individuals, leagues and partnerships and providing resources and assistance on outreach programs to state youth outreach coordinators.
In addition, as National Outreach Director, Gargaly will serve on USA Ultimate’s Equity Task Force, a group working to overcome hurdles and bring ultimate to currently underserved communities.
"I am incredibly excited to take on the position of National Outreach Director," said Gargaly. "My dream is to develop youth ultimate leadership programs that…empower and create bold leaders. When people start playing ultimate at a young age and get exposed to a message of equity and a foundation of spirit of the game, they learn how to interact with people powerfully and respectfully…When they apply these skills to the other aspects of their lives, the possibilities for them are incredible. I stand for those possibilities for all young people and will work to make our programs available to everyone."
Gargaly has been a member of the ultimate community since 2001. In that time, he has played in many areas of the United States, as well as in Australia and Thailand, and has been a middle school coach in the Seattle area. He is in the process of developing a leadership program based around ultimate that is inspired by the Girls’ Ultimate Movement (GUM) curriculum and the Seattle-area AGE UP program. Professionally, Gargaly has been an elementary school teacher, has taught English abroad and is currently working as a recreation attendant for Seattle Parks and Recreation.
