At the 2010 USA Ultimate Grand Masters and Masters Women’s Championships last weekend in Boulder, a lot of spirited and competitive Ultimate was played. Twenty-six teams traveled to the Front Range and Pleasant Valley Sports Fields to compete in the second-annual event. Along with two days of jam-packed Ultimate, ‘Spirit of the Game’ was on full display.
Throughout the event, teams helped one another off the ground and congratulated each other on and off the field. After each game, spirit scores were taken from each team that ranked their opponents’ spirit level. Ultimate is a game that puts the responsibility of fairness on the individual players and relies on ‘Spirit of the Game’ to keep an even flow. After the event, all of the spirit scores were averaged and a winner was declared in each division.
In the women’s division, the spirit was high throughout both days, But in the end, Salt Lake City’s "Old Scores to Settle" walked away as the Team Spirit winners. In the Grand Masters division, "Age Against the Machine from Cincinnati received the highest average of the 16 squads and was crowned the 2010 Team Spirit winners.
Additionally, each team was asked to nominate a player from their own team prior to the event as their individual Spirit winner. The team chooses whoever they feel best displays the highest level of spirit and has the best attitude on and off the field. The recipients are then recognized with a medal and Discraft ‘Spirit o the Game’ disc for their outstanding accomplishments during the award ceremony.
