College STAR Program:: Week 2 Recap

Last weekend, we ran our last two College STAR Program events in conjunction with Texas and Rocky Mountain Club Sectionals. Showdown and Doublewide lead the clinic in the Texas section, while Molly Brown ran the Rocky Mountain clinic.

The Texas clinic had nearly 30 college players in attendance, even after a long day of games in the heat. Most participants were fairly experienced college players, so instructors were able to both reinforce fundamentals, as well as give players more advanced instruction. Players chose from four different stations that covered various throwing skills, man defense, and cutting. Organizer Tina Woodings, said "It's great to have an avenue to bridge the gap between college and club. These are players we will be recruiting in the next few years. We are excited to participate in the program again next year!" The various club teams in Texas draw heavily from the college teams in the area, and Showdown and Doublewide players (and alums) have served faithfully as coaches for teams like Texas, Texas A&M, and Rice. The STAR clinic was an opportunity to reach out to some of the other teams in the state, and to continue building a pipeline for players that will bolster the club teams for years to come.

More than a dozen Molly Brown players led a clinic for players from Colorado’s four college teams this past Sunday. Over 50 players from Air Force, Colorado, Colorado College, and Colorado State spent the day in Denver, participating in scrimmages, and staying afterward for the clinic. Six different stations were set up, giving college players the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of skills sessions. Molly Brown had just finished helping with a clinic for nearly 300 college players in Virginia a week earlier, and was very excited to bring their skills and knowledge to help the college teams back home. Even after a busy September of practices and tournaments, Molly Brown players showed up in full force, excited to be building the future of women’s ultimate in Colorado. Colorado captain Whitney Fose gave her take on the clinic, saying,

The clinic was an awesome experience for all of our players, new and old. With the wide range of clinics, all levels of ultimate were met. The Molly Brown women gave good, concise tips on different skills we use on the field whether it be breaking the mark or dominating the sky. We look forward to incorporating some of the drills we did in our practices this coming season.

Check out the College STAR Program gallery for pictures from both of these events. A huge thank you to the organizers, and their respective club teams for making these clinics possible.
