DISCRAFT ULTRASTAR, WEB MOLD – HOT STAMP & SUPERCOLOR CENTER APPROVED FOR CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL COMPETITION
Web Mold – Full Supercolor Approved For General Use
Boulder, Colo. (April 23, 2014)—USA Ultimate approved both the Discraft UltraStar, Web Mold – Hot Stamp and the Discraft UltraStar, Web Mold – Supercolor Center for championship-level competition, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States announced today. Additionally, the Discraft UltraStar, Web Mold – Full Supercolor was approved for general play.
The approvals mark the third and fourth UltraStar versions currently approved by players for use in USA Ultimate’s championship series and national championship events, joining the Discraft UltraStar, Westland Mold – Hot Stamp and the Discraft UltraStar, Westland Mold – Supercolor Center.
Discraft manufactures the 175g UltraStar – the gold standard in ultimate discs – using two separate and identical molds, the Westland Mold and the Web Mold, and utilizes various printing process, the hot stamp, a Supercolor center and the full Supercolor design. Until today, the disc manufactured by the Westland mold was the only one approved by players for championship play.
The four UltraStar models were approved for championship play following USA Ultimate’s comprehensive testing procedures by the Flight Test Pool comprised of geographically diverse male and female athletes who play in the college and club divisions. The Flight Test Pool evaluates submissions based on parameters set by USA Ultimate’s Disc Standards Committee. The latest championship-approved discs, were approved by a 49-person Flight Test Pool.
"What has become known as the UltraStar Web Mold was engineered to exacting specifications in order to help us meet the growing demands of the ultimate community" said Pad Timmons, Director of Discraft Ultimate Operations. "It is an exact clone of the original, with exception of some differences in the engraved text. Regardless of which mold your disc came from, you are throwing the UltraStar; same performance, same flight, same feel, same consistency. USA Ultimate’s Flight Test Pool results are a testament to that consistency, and we are excited over this new opportunity to increase production and better serve the athletes."
The four versions of the Discraft UltraStar, as well as the Daredevil Gamedisc, are currently the only five makes and models of discs approved by players for use in championship-level competition.
Additional models that previously received base-level general approval by the Flight Test Pool for use in non-championship play, such as local leagues and tournaments, include the Discraft UltraStar, Westland Mold – Full Supercolor, the EuroDisc Ultimate Standard and the Innova Pulsar.
