2015 World Championships of Beach Ultimate Conclude in Dubai

Seven U.S. National Teams Claim Seven Medals
Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 13, 2015) – Jumeirah Beach in Dubai, U.A.E., is quiet once again, after this morning’s conclusion of the 2015 World Championships of Beach Ultimate hosted by the World Flying Disc Federation and Beach Ultimate Lovers Association.
The seven teams representing the U.S. in Dubai came away with seven medals: six gold and one bronze. The U.S. finished the tournament atop the medal rankings, followed by Canada and Great Britain.
Thursday
The women’s masters team was the first American squad to capture gold with an 8-2 defeat of Canada in a windy, huck-and-play-D style game. Their dominance was evident throughout the tournament, outscoring their opponents 95-14 over the course of eight games.
The mixed masters team quickly tallied another gold for the U.S. with a 9-5 win over Canada in their own windy contest. They too looked unbeatable throughout the tournament and finished with a +70 score differential through nine games. With the finals win, the mixed masters team also earned revenge for their silver-medal performance at the 2011 World Championships of Beach Ultimate, where they fell to Great Britain in the finals.

Friday
In one of the more evenly matched divisions, the U.S. mixed team earned a close quarterfinal victory over Sweden but fell to Canada in a tightly contested semifinal match up. The team rebounded in the third-place game and defeated Portugal to claim the bronze medal, 11-5. Germany defeated Canada, 11-9, for gold in the final match of the tournament.
The U.S. grandmasters team faced a tough Sweden squad who led by as many as four points late in the game, 9-5. With the game seemingly out of reach and time running out, the U.S. mounted a stunning comeback, scoring the final five points to take gold, 10-9.
In yet another finals match up between the United States and our northern neighbors, the U.S. open masters team took an early lead and never looked back, defeating Canada 13-8 to claim the championship and a gold medal.
After defeating Canada in the semifinals, the U.S. women’s team faced a tall and determined Russian squad in the final. A key score on a marathon point late in the game gave the U.S. their first lead of the second half, and they were able to hold on to win the gold, 9-8.
The U.S. open team survived their highly anticipated semifinal match up against the Philippines’s Boracay Dragons, the longest game of the tournament, pulling out an 8-7 win to advance to Friday’s finals against Great Britain. The U.S. earned a 13-7 win in the finals, claiming the sixth and final gold medal of the tournament for the United States.
In addition to their gold medals, both the U.S. open and women's teams also won their division's spirit awards.
