2015 Southerns Recap: Day One

Day one of the 2015 High School Southern Championships is in the books in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Boys' Division
Day one of the boys' division saw the top seeds in three of the pools hold, but Pool A had some upsets to make it interesting.
In Pool A, bottom seed Catholic went 2-1 on the day losing only a close one to top seed Lakeside 9-8 to and ending the day as the number one seed. Lakeside also went 2-1 but dropped down to the pool's third spot while second-seeded Apex held (also at 2-1).
In Pool B, top seed Carolina Friends cruised to a 3-0 record while Chapel Hill managed to break seed, moving from third to second in the pool after beating the pool's original two seed Yorktown 10-7.
Pool C see was the least dramatic with everyone holding seed. Two seed Chapel Hill game number one seed Carrboro its closest game 9-7.
In Pool D, top seed Paideia managed to hold seed despite some close games. Three seed Blackman ended in second place after beating Independence 9-5.
In the final round of games, after teams were re-seeded, Pool A's teams lost both their games with Lakeside blown out by Blackman 13-5 and Independence squeaking by Apex 7-6. This leaves only initial four seed Catholic alive in the championship bracket from Pool A. Grady and East Chapel Hill won close games to advance into the championship bracket as well.
Sunday should see some interesting match ups, and it will remain to be seen if anyone can stop Carolina Friends and Carrboro or if Catholic can continue their underdog run.

Girls' Division
There was a shake up in Pool B, but the rest of the pools saw their top seeds hold in day one of play in the girls' division.
Paideia Varsity had an easy time, going 2-0 in Pool A. Blackman barely got by the North Carolina School of Science and Math 8-7 to hold on to their second spot in the pool.
Pool B saw two seed Carrboro go 2-0 with lopsided victories over both HB Woodlawn and Brookwood to steal the number one spot from HB Woodlawn. Pool C saw close games, but East Chapel Hill clung to their number one seed with 11-8 and 9-6 wins over Yorktown-Washington Lee and Paideia JV, respectively.
It was another series of close games in Pool D with USN edging Green Hope 7-5 and beating Grady 9-5. Grady squeaked by Green Hope 7-6 to swap seeds with them and end up as the number two in the Pool.
It looks like the one seeds will be battling it out on Sunday, with Carrboro hoping to continue their run from the second seed to hopeful champion.
