Corvallis, Ore. (May 31, 2014) – Northwest School and Corvallis Ladies Ultimate dominated the A and B pools respectively during Saturday’s round of pool play at the 2014 High School Western Championships, solidifying their spots at the top of their pools after four beautifully played games. Northwest’s smooth play and solid handling helped them get through their day undefeated, while CLU’s great up-line throws and speed led them smoothly to their four victories.

The combo team, Berkeley California Roll, scored their first point together as a team against CLU and earned their first hard-fought win, 7-6, against Sheldon during the second round of play. Hailing from seven different schools in the California Bay Area region, California Roll came together two weeks prior to Westerns and were excited to challenge Sheldon for the win.

South Eugene and Garfield matched up in the second round of play in a difficult but well-earned win for Garfield. The two teams swapped points for the entirety of the game, until Garfield broke away to take the win in hard cap at 7-5. Both teams played hard and continued to fight throughout. South Eugene boasted several solid handlers, and Garfield played tough defense.

Sheldon made the trip to Westerns with quite a few new recruits and worked on solid dump cuts and building a consistent offense. Though Roosevelt earned a solid 13-3 victory against Sheldon, Sheldon came together to play well throughout. Roosevelt came to the field with strong throws and handling skills from many of their players, along with a strong athletic line and great consistency, which led them to victory against Berkeley after defeating Sheldon.

During the fifth (and final) round of the day, the wind steadily gained strength, changing the play of all teams. Turnovers increased, and upwind points proved difficult all around. Summit finished the day strong with an 8-2 win over Garfield in the hard time cap. Franklin appeared to present a solid challenge for CLU, using scrappy defense and quick offense to keep with CLU during the game’s first several points. But CLU proved too much to handle. They pulled away in the second half, scoring the last six points to win 13-5. Nathan Hale challenged Northwest in their last game of the day with tight defense. While Northwest walked away with a 9-5 victory, the speed and athleticism of the game showcased the talent and skill of both teams involved.

Saturday was a day of hard play and great spirit all around, and Sunday promises to keep the momentum going for an exciting close to the girls’ division at this year’s edition of Westerns.
