Boulder, Colo. (Oct. 22, 2014) – Following each game at the USA Ultimate National Championships, teams are asked to rate their opponents using the World Flying Disc Federation’s spirit scoring system, with the following objectives:

  1. to educate players on what Spirit of the Game is;
  2. to help teams improve specific parts of their Spirit; and
  3. to celebrate SOTG by awarding a prize to the team that receives the highest score.

The teams rate their opponents on a scale of one to four, with two being a good spirit rating, in each of five categories: rules knowledge, fouls and body contact, fair-mindedness, positive attitude and communication. The scores are averaged, and the team with the highest overall score is award the Team Spirit Award.

In addition to the Team Spirit Awards, individual spirit awards are presented in the men’s and women’s divisions. Each award is named after a late individual relevant to that division. Teams are asked to nominate a player from their own team who displays the highest level of spirit, a player whose attitude should be emulated by teammates and admired by opponents. This year, both winners came from Boston’s top club teams:

2014Farricker

2014Pufahl
