AMP's Patrick Sherlock on Saturday's Mixed Division play at the 2012 Chesapeake Invite:
"All four of Chesapeake's top seeds have won a tournament already this summer and have quarterfinal experience at the Club Championship level. Do not expect too many challenges before crossovers on Saturday..."
I only dared to make one prediction, and was proven wrong in the first round as Atlanta's Bucket played break free offense to upset top-seeded The Ghosts. There was more excitement in the second round as Bucket went down 5-1 to AMP and stormed back to win 13-10 before taking Pool E with a final round victory over Ant Madness.
In Pool F Ambiguously Grey had a first round upset bid of their own, just losing to Slow White 11-10. Both teams won out fairly comfortably afterward as well as their crossovers for the right to sleep in with a first round bye.
Drag'n Thrust was the most dominant of of the 1-seeds; locals Death By Jubilee got the closest in Pool G at 13-10. The Minneapolis team was pushed in the crossover by Termite's Entourage, but prevailed 14-12. The rest of the pool played out according to seed, after which Sabre Corp and Death By Jubilee lost their crossovers to fall into the 13th place bracket.
The final first round surprise of the day came in Pool H as Termite's Entourage beat Wild Card 13-11. The New Jersey team fell in the next round to Overhaul, but beat District 5 comfortably to take second in the pool. Wild Card and District, third and fourth respectively both won their crossovers to start Sunday morning in pre-quarters.
Look for these matchups Sunday morning:
- Termite's will be favored over Cahoots, with an intriguing second round matchup against Ambiguously Grey looming. Termite beat AG twice at Mid Atlantic Regionals last season, the second time to claim the final bid to Nationals.
- Bucket and Wild Card will battle for the right to face Drag'N Thrust, with strength bid stakes for 3 regions.
- Northeast rivals Ghost and District 5 matchup with the winner meeting Overhaul, in perhaps the most loaded quadrant of the bracket.
- AMP and 7Express meet for the 4th time this season dating back to Bell Crack [7X is 2-1, 1-0 in sanctioned games]. Slow White waits in round 2.
Among the teams still active in the championship bracket are 3 from the Mid Atlantic, 2 Southeast, 1 North Central, 1 Great Lakes and 5 from Northeast..
