The Surly team is named after the Surly Brewing Company, which was formed by one of our own and has a reputation for fashioning some of the finest beers you will ever have the pleasure to swill. Surly teams have a proud tradition of playing tough, competitive Ultimate on the field, and generously sharing our fine craft beer at the end of the day on the sideline.  The previous Surly GM teams brought together friends and foe from around the Midwest Region with a unified purpose under the Surly flagship.  This year’s version will be no different with most of the team being recruited from the Surly and Real Huck Master’s teams.  We will once again be stocked with plenty of Surly beverages so come on by, say hello and get a little Surly!

Hoosier and Buckeye brethren from ‘95 Lemon,’96 Hucking Foosiers and ’97-’98 Pump House 5 teams, traded in the Firestone tractor-trailer for a rickety old Recreational Vehicle.   Between games, if you happen to spot an RV buzzing with energy, you’ll know its Chico’s living large at Nationals once again.  Let freedom ring!  BONG… BONG… BONG!!!

Formed in 2011, we are a collection of rag-tag players from the Midwest.  We have former Tuna, Cooler By The Lake, Shazam (90s Chicago-based open team), and CLX players.  We were all rejected by prettier and more popular Grand Master teams and brought our homely talents together to form Old Milwaukee.

With its origins in the late 80s, Cooler Classic is Scooter’s baby.  Its 23rd tournament will be outside of Milwaukee, Disconsin on August 21-22.  As a preview of prizes available at Cooler Classic 23, Old Milwaukee will be handing out cheesecows (one word) and sausages as gifts to our opponents.

May the breeze be with you.

Happening upon a pile of bones, biologists found one particularly striking skeleton.  They were so struck by the features that they attempted to recreate the creature by harvesting DNA from the marrow.  What they unleashed upon an unsuspecting world was a beast with jaws that held massive teeth and razor-sharp words.  All the earth’s creatures ran into hiding as he bellowed across the land:

"FIRST NAME MISTER, MIDDLE NAME PERIOD, LAST NAME….T."

Some towns don't know when to quit.  Pittsburgh is one of those towns.  It was supposed to be dead in 1980, rusty and useless as the wreckage of the furnaces that stood mute and cold, abandoned beside its rivers.  But it didn't die.  It came back smarter, piled up championships, corporate headquarters and high-tech startups, and soon it was making everybody's list of best places to live.

Some guys don't know when to quit.  We're those guys.  Almost every one of us threw our first disc on the hard clay fields of Pittsburgh way back in the twentieth century.  We went to nationals twice as a masters team, and then, like the furnaces, we shut down.  But not for long.  We're back now, and with a few faces so old they're new again.  We're a little grayer, maybe a little smarter, but mostly, like our hometown, just happy to still be in the game.

Hi, we're Death or Glory (aka DoG).  You may remember us from some past championships such as 1994 Open Nationals, 1995 Open Nationals, 1996 Clambake...  After the final original members retired from Open competition in 2006, the team relived the glory days with titles at 2007 Masters Nationals, 2008 Clambake, and the highlight – the inaugural 2009 Grand Masters Championship.  After a lean 2010, we are eager to rebound against our worthy rivals this year.  Can DoG regain its winning ways in the hope of becoming the first ever repeat winner in the GM Division?

In 1983, former New Rochelle High School Ultimate team captain Jonathan Rubin, who was now captain at Vassar and seeking funding, concocted the idea of telling Vassar administration that a team from the Soviet Union was coming to their tournament.  Thus, Moscow State was formed from NHRS and other local players; went on to win the Vassar tournament; and ended up being one of those omnipresent summer touring teams.  For 20+ years, we did the annual NE circuit (including Ow-My-Knee, No Borders, and Hingham), culminating in a #20 finish at 1993 Worlds in Madison and participation in 1995 Worlds in Street, UK.

Over the years, we’ve had friendly and not-so-friendly rivalries with teams such as Jason and the Argonauts, C.R.U.D., Ottawa, Locomotion, Somerville Youths, Slipped Disc, and others, but whoever the opponent, we’ve been told that playing against Moscow State was always memorable!  We’ve now gathered up our memories of glory and our broken bodies, and made the journey to Ohio.  We’re a Soviet-era team trying to find our way in the modern world.

These are the men your mothers warned you about...bad influence and miscreant action tossed together in a perfect blend - both shaken and stirred. Thoroughbred, corn fed, and inbred; we hail from high in the hills, deep in the valleys, and across the plains where deep cuts and long hucks have drawn us together in the land of Big Sky...a plentiful region where has-been and once-were still thrive.

These BiGS are good ol' fashioned American made steel thrown down on a rugged, built-for- abuse chassis and constructed in a time when smooth cruisin and a stable's worth of horsepower crushed the concept of efficiency. You'll find we guzzle our fuels and belch out whatever we damn well please...and if were goin' off half-cocked we’re probably only half way there.

Formed in 1994 in Fremont, California as a competitive Open division team, we have origins in the 1986-1989 Ohlone College team in Fremont, as well as San Jose based clubs. In the past we've competed at sectionals in the Open division, regional’s in the Open and Masters divisions and Nationals in the Grand Masters division. Several of our players participate in Bay Area Mixed teams, as well, and our team boasts two UPA Certified Observers. We still get together weekly to play Ultimate and hacky sack, drink beer and insult each other. On Tuesdays we have a Smelt Night (Google it). Being voted the 2009 Grand Masters Spirit Champions by our fellow players is one of the great highlights of our team's history.

Ball & Chain was formed to give Atlanta & Southern based Masters & Grand Masters Ultimate players a welcome weekend pass (once in awhile) from the old Ball & Chain at home.  Affectionately known as B&C, the team first formed as Masters in 2006, making Nationals in their first year together. After a two year hiatus, B&C again qualified for Nationals in masters 2009 & 2010. Last year B&C attended their first Grand Masters nationals finishing 5th.  These dastardly handsome southern gentleman are back again in 2011, sporting new uniforms to remind ourselves, that in the end, we are the ones who still wear the shorts & cleats in the family!

Forged in the same Norse smithy as Thor’s legendary mjolnir (star of the recent major motion picture), these Hammers were initially tossed into the rubbish bin by a wizened metallurgist who was no doubt distracted by incoming sext messages on his brand new Droid. The blacksmith considered the steel inferior, weakened by impurities, thusly deeming the Hammers to be "Sick." Lo, but he was mistaken. Though these Hammers--unlike their more famous brethren--do actually age, it is exactly this aberration from which they draw their strength—and their Grand Masters eligibility. And now, centuries later, the evolution of language has finally rendered accurate the appellation "Sick Hammers."

Currently residing in all parts of Texas—with a few stragglers in SoCal and ‘Bama—the squad is fortunate enough to have earned an invitation to all three editions of the official Grand Masters Ball. And though many of the same rugged faces have returned to the big dance, they’re joined this year by a few new whipper-snappers. It’s no myth: these mighty Hammers may corrode and rust (proudly), but never shall they give in or crumble.

The Ozark Hillbillys are happy as a hog in a wallow to play at Nationals for the third year running. With a 5th place finish in 2009, an overall winning record at this shindig, and a profound lack of dental hygiene, the ‘billys always attract a crowd with our white-hot, lightning-fast style. Once again, we hope we’ve distilled that recipe from many moons ago that will allow us to shine on the field brighter than Pappy’s tin roof during one of them dad gum magneto-electrical storms.

Speaking of storms, many of our friends and kinfolk were affected by the floods and twisters that ravaged our home state and many others throughout the south and central US this spring.  Several Hillbillys have participated in the relief efforts. We’ll have a clearly marked jar on our sideline (please don’t confuse it with Pappy’s tobbacky can) for monetary donations for tornado relief in Vilonia, Denning, and Cincinnati (no fooling), Arkansas; West Siloam Springs, Oklahoma; and Joplin, Missouri. We will donate the funds to the Red Cross on behalf of all teams in attendance this weekend.

And, as always, run like Dan!!

For three decades this long-standing team of Colorado-based players has delivered incredible Ultimate and created enduring camaraderie in both Colorado and National competition.  Now, as Defending Grand Masters Champions, Old and In the Way has again assembled a stellar cast with a great mix of young (sic) stars and crafty ancients.  We have a strong legacy over a great span of years – we’ve won two USA Master’s National Championships (1999 & 2005), one USA Ultimate Grand Masters title and one WFDF Master’s World Championship (Heilbronn, Germany 2000).  We are proud of our record but also gain great satisfaction in being a great TEAM - with continuity of local team members and consistent leadership dating back to the 90’s.  This year our roster will include at least a dozen players from our 1999/2000 teams supplemented with the speedy core of our newly Old. Watch out for the "very OLD" as we seek to defend our USAU GM Title!   Good luck to all the teams in the 2011 Grand Master’s National Series Tourney.

Dish is excited to be celebrating our 12th year as a hot Chicago women’s ultimate team!

Our overall philosophy is that every player brings a diverse background and unique abilities that contributes to making us, as a team and as individuals, even stronger. We try to build our strategy around those unique capabilities, to ultimately put together all those pieces to form a complete, solid team unit. We look for players of all levels with enthusiasm to learn, commitment to making Dish the best it can be, and most importantly a positive attitude and energy – recognizing our core philosophy that the team is greater than the sum of it’s parts.  While the players may vary from year to year, we never vary in our commitment to that philosophy and to each other.

RETRO has robbed the cradle this year and is bringing a team of young’uns to catch our old school hucks.    While most of us are from the Triangle area of NC, we’re not your prissy southern debutants.   We like to party as if we were still 29 and layout as if we were 20.   We’ve got several MILFs, some single divorcees or never been weds (attention Grand Masters!), a newly married couple, and a perennial bridesmaid.    Come check us out – you won’t be disappointed.

      From Wikipedia.
Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion, from the overall postmodern past, that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. It generally implies a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years.

The joy of the disc brought this wily group of Big Sky veterans together from all corners of their spirited section.  While these women usually battled against each other in the mixed scene, over the many, long years of competition, they have forged friendships on and off the field.  This year, they have decided to stop chasing each other - opting to run, huck, and win together as a team.  Off the field, they enjoy the awe and excitement of mountain life.  This passion carries over into their play – getting Ho D’s like ripping a powder-laden chute and shredding the zone like summiting a craggy peak.  And when they aren’t pursuing the beauty and adrenaline related to disc and mountain sports, they pick up their hoes and head into their backyards to garden!

San Francisco is certainly not a one-horse town.  Rather the city proper and the larger Bay Area is a place where fields are full of high-spirited competitive ultimate for ponies, mares, and stallions alike.  This breeding ground serves as a perfect birthplace of Darkhorse, the first women’s masters team from the Bay Area.  Our new herd is composed of players from women’s and mixed teams with some key pick-ups from across the country.  We are chomping at the bit for the July 9th and 10th weekend in Ohio.  Our mane goal is to play with intensity and spirit, all the while avoiding charley horses, and getting a chance to nibble on that grand prize

Once upon a time there was dog made of sticks.  She had a hard life: whenever she would go to the park or the river, all the other dogs, particularly the labradors, chased her, and brought each of her limbs back to their masters, tails wagging.  The masters would put Stick Dog back together again, throw a frisbee for her to play with, until the other dogs fetched her limbs for their masters all over again.  On and on went her life, and so Stick Dog mastered chasing frisbees, but each time, did so a little more broken than the last.  Stick Dog thanks USAU for giving her a place to play, and asks the organizers to strictly enforce the on-leash policy.

Safari-tarians are still making it from one end of the field to the other for our third year in a row at women masters.  It is our lasting love of ultimate and our hatred of drills, track workouts and practice that keep us competing at the master level.  Out of the jungle we still can limp provided our sideline has plenty of advil.  We may not be 100 years old yet and sometimes we look it but the wild spirit of Safari-tarians burns as bright as ever.

As permanent as the Rocky Mountains, Well Done players have a lasting love for Ultimate Frisbee. Each of our players holds special things dear, but we are consistent in our commitment to holding athleticism, competition, laughter, and friendship close to our hearts. We have deep Colorado roots or connections and have all played on many teams throughout our Frisbee careers. Most of us have dedicated many years to Women’s Club Frisbee and are excited for an abbreviated, competitive, women’s masters series where we can connect and re-connect with our old friends.
