USA Ultimate is a member of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), which is a member of the General Association of International Sport Federations (GAISF), the International World Games Association (IWGA), and is a recognized member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). WFDF became a provisional GAISF member in 1987 and was admitted as a full member to GAISF and IWGA in 1996, and to the IOC in 2015. Flying disc sports were introduced as demonstration sports at the 1989 World Games in Karlsruhe, Germany. Ultimate was first admitted as a medal sport at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan.
