This page covers information related to college division competition in 1999.

1999 marked the first year in the 8 region structure, a new format for the College Championships, and a new wildcard structure for the championships (50% strength, 50% size)

With this change to 8 regions, the # of womens teams was to be either 12 or 14, depending on team participation levels in the eight regions.

In 1998, the players voted to expanded the UPA College regional layout to eight regions (it had been 5 since the start of the division in 1984).  Teams were from one of 8 newly drawn regions: Atlantic Coast (AC); Central (CN); Great Lakes (GL); Metro East (ME); New England (NE); Northwest (NW); South (SO); Southwest (SW).
 
Regionals were to take place on one of the following weekends: April 24 - 25, April 30 - May 1, or May 8 - 9.

Although there was not yet a formalized regular season, many teams participated in events prior to the series.

Developed in 1987 by Sholom Simon, the UPA College Rankings rankings utilized a computer algorithm based loosely on a formula borrowed from the U.S Chess Federation.
