Eric Gelfand Named New National Outreach Director

Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 18, 2019) – USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States, is excited to announce the appointment of Eric Gelfand to the youth division’s national volunteer structure as the new National Outreach Director. Gelfand assumes the role after Chuck Gargaly fulfilled his term and stepped down earlier this year.

In his new role, Gelfand will serve as a member of USA Ultimate’s Youth Working Group and work with the USA Ultimate Youth and Education Programs staff to help bring the sport of ultimate to new youth populations in the United States. He will recruit, expand, manage and motivate USA Ultimate’s state-level volunteers, as well as develop guidance on outreach best practices for clinics and leagues and provide resources and assistance on outreach programs to outreach coordinators. 

Gelfand has been involved in the world of sports for more than 30 years and has experience at the local, developmental level as well as the elite, national team level. He helped develop and implement the Olympic Development Plan for USA Gymnastics in the 1990s and has experience as a member of their junior national coaching staff. He found ultimate in 2015 and has been an elementary and middle school coach ever since. 

Gelfand is currently a PE teacher and sports coach at the Whidby Island and Seattle Waldorf Schools in Washington State and is passionate about ultimate’s ability to teach 21st century citizenship through Spirit of the Game, self-refereed conflict resolution, gender equity and a focus on definitions of success that include more than simply winning.
